PORTRAITS BASED ON THE DOCUMENTARY "BLACK BOYS"

This is a series which came about after watching the movie "Black Boys" during black history month.  I was seeking to educate myself so that I can better empathise and advocate for people of different races.  I seek to be an ally and to educate other white people to be a small part in ending a very ugly aspect of our society.  This was one of many movies I watched but, this particular one had a profound impact on me as a white woman.

The series is divided into to parts - Those who are still living - I seek to communicate that I believe in them and all the potential they hold within themselves if given a chance to pursue it.  The gold leaf is a representation of their divine light, the green indicates the life still within them and the flowers and butterflies represent the potential they hold. I purposely included two accomplished adults to show great examples of realized potential.

The second set is a memorial to those young black men who have lost their lives having their potential taken from them. The silver represents the purity of their souls and the flowers and moths are symbolic  of the potential lost to the world forever.

We simply have to start believing in these young men, give them a equal chance and stop the unnecessary  killing and discrimination.
